The secrets of a recycling expert
We have had the amazing honor to steal a few moments of Mats Torring’s time and will now share this legends thoughts with you guys. He is a business developer at Stena Recycling, and some would call him a recycling expert.
Stena Recycling is at the forefront of recycling in over 173 locations in the Nordic countries as well as Poland. They truly encompass the power to innovate and the Stena Nordic Recycling Center in Halmstad is one example of this. Can you explain the difference between compostable, biodegradable and degradable?
Compostable = Degradable under oxygen rich conditions (aerobic).
An example here could be a garden compost.
Biodegradable= Degradable under anaerobic or aerobic conditions- also referred to as bio based degradation.
An example of anaerobic degradation would be a landfill.
Degradable = All types of degradation of the polymer chain, could be biodegradable, oxo-degradable (adding of a metal salt into the polymer matrix that in contact with oxygen forms radicals that degrade the polymer),UV-degradable, Heat-degradable, etc. often causes problems for recyclable plastics.

Do you prefer recyclable or biodegradable? Why?
Recyclable, because drinking bottles are unlikely to end up in a suited industrial compost but rather with plastic products in a recycling bin. So a biodegradable bottle would ruin all those recycled products.

Why can't all plastics be recycled?
All thermoplastic materials can be material recycled at least 5 times. Different types of contaminations and cost for collection and sorting are the main challenges. Thermosets like epoxy, rubber, etc consists of "one large molecule", degrades when heated.

Can you give your best tips for someone that wants to start their journey on getting better at recycling?
Demand recycled material in products you buy and buy products where you know where you can return the product so that it can be recycled.
