The Change
You’ve all undoubtedly seen the sorrowful video of a skeletal polar bear desperately foraging for food in his last attempt to stave off the shadow of death that lurks over him. If not, click on the link and watch it HERE before you read the rest of this blog post.
It’s not an easy thing to watch, it reaches and pulls on something deep down inside of me and, if I’m honest with myself and you, it’s guilt. That polar bear is the symptom of how we have been living for the past 200 years since the Industrial Revolution, our over-consumption and, quite bluntly greed, means that we are sitting at the precipice of environmental armageddon.
According to the Center for biological Diversity, in Tuscon, Arizona 30-50% of all animal species could be heading towards extinction by the middle of the century. And it is a widely held belief among biologists that we are in the midst of the sixth great mass extinction. The last one being the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.
But that is the past and as we all know, we can’t change the past but we can learn the lessons from it and stop making the same mistake now and in the future. We are slowly starting to turn the corner by switching to renewable resources such as solar and wind to power our cars and homes. But in truth it will take more than business and governments forcing as down a route of change, we as individuals must change and start as soon as possible.
Climate Change, by the time it takes effect, will rob me of nothing. I will likely be dead or a very old man waiting for that final nail in the proverbial coffin but this isn’t about us. It’s about what we leave behind, the only thing of any real worth that we leave, the next generation, our children. We now stand in the unique position of deciding what kind of future our children and grandchildren inherit, and history will judge us accordingly. Will we gift the future of humanity a life equivalent to that of the starving Polar Bear or will, as so many before us have failed to do, learn the failures of our past and give our children the chance to walk their own path on humanity’s journey?
